Re‐emerging ocean temperature anomalies in late‐2010 associated with a repeat negative NAO

چکیده
[1] Northern Europe was influenced by consecutive episodes of extreme winter weather at the start and end of the 2010 calendar year. A tripole pattern in North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs), associated with an exceptionally negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), characterized both winter periods. This pattern was largely absent at the surface during the 2010 summer season; however equivalent sub‐surface temperature anomalies were preserved within the seasonal thermocline throughout the year. Here, we present evidence for the re‐emergence of late‐winter 2009/10 SSTAs during the following early winter season of 2010/11. The observed re‐emergence contributes toward the winter‐to‐winter persistence of the anomalous tripole pattern. Considering the active influence of the oceans upon leading modes of atmospheric circulation over seasonal timescales, associated with the memory of large‐scale sea surface temperature anomaly patterns, the re‐emergence of remnant temperature anomalies may have also contributed toward the persistence of a negative winter NAO, and the recurrence of extreme wintry conditions over the initial 2010/11 winter season. Formation and propagation of temperature anomalies along the North
A general circulation ocean model has been used to study the formation and propagation mechanisms of North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)-generated temperature anomalies along the pathway of the North Atlantic Current (NAC). The NAO-like wind forcing generates temperature anomalies in the upper 440 m which propagate along the pathway of the NAC in general agreement with the observations. The analys...

The heat waves today are one of the most important climatic hazards in the world. According to many scientists, the Severe and frequent occurrence of heat waves in recent years has been due to the emission of greenhouse gases and consequent increased global warming. The purpose of this study is to investigate changes in the frequency and intensity of heat waves As well as their relationship wit...
متن کاملAtmosphere–Ocean Interaction in the North Atlantic: Near-Surface Climate Variability*
The impact of an interactive ocean on the midlatitude atmosphere is examined using a 31-yr integration of a variable depth mixed layer ocean model of the North Atlantic (between 208 and 608N) coupled to the NCAR Community Climate model (CCM1). Coupled model results are compared with a 31-yr control simulation where the annual cycle of sea surface temperatures is prescribed. The analysis focuses...
متن کاملInvestigating the Impact of Reemerging Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies on the Winter Atmospheric Circulation over the North Atlantic
Extratropical SSTs can be influenced by the “reemergence mechanism,” whereby thermal anomalies in the deep winter mixed layer persist at depth through summer and are then reentrained into the mixed layer in the following winter. The impact of reemergence in the North Atlantic Ocean (NAO) upon the climate system is investigated using an atmospheric general circulation model coupled to a mixed la...
متن کاملAn Idealized Model Study of the Mass and Heat Transports between the Subpolar and Subtropical Gyres
The response of an ocean model of the subtropical and subpolar gyres to idealized surface forcing anomalies that mimic the thermal and mechanical forcing associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is analyzed. Emphasis is given on the subpolar gyre and the mechanisms that drive the mass and heat exchanges between the two gyres. First, steady anomalies are applied. Surface heat flux an...
